Now in its 20th season, Kantorei is a choral ensemble drawing its members from throughout the Twin Cities and surrounding areas.
Kantorei was founded in 1988 by Dr. Axel Theimer and a group of alumni/alumnae from The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University who casually met to sing and perform a few times a year. Several years later, no longer restricted to alums, Kantorei has grown to include about 40 singers from across the metropolitan area and greater Minnesota who perform a full schedule each season.
In its years of existence, Kantorei has developed into a high-quality a cappella choral ensemble. Kantorei strives to perform works outside of the mainstream, focusing on seldom-heard 19th and 20th-century European compositions. The repertoire has provided artistic challenges and experiences to its singers and audiences. In addition, Kantorei has sponsored and participated in education outreach concerts and workshops for Minnesota school, church, and youth choirs. Kantorei has released three compact discs: Forgotten Masters and Masterpieces (2001), Celebrating the Mystery: Choral Music of Advent and Christmas (2003), and Cathedrals to Mountains: Choral Music of the Alps (2006). Kantorei also sponsored and participated in the recording of Songs for Mary (2002), a special project by local choral ensembles to raise funds for Sharing & Caring Hands.
"Congratulations on 40 years of marvelous choral music--vocal excellence as well as essence--a gift to your community and to to the world!"
